In the 2025 ranking of Vietnam’s Top 500 largest enterprises (VNR500), released by Vietnam Report JSC, Hai Phong had 17 companies on the list. Among them, one ranked in the national Top 20 and another placed within the Top 60, underscoring the city’s growing presence among Vietnam’s leading corporate players.

This result is a source of pride, but it also raises a key question: how Hai Phong can nurture more enterprises in the years ahead.

Not every locality has businesses large and competitive enough to feature in the VNR500. A closer look at Hai Phong’s companies in the 2025 ranking reveals a common pattern. Most are active in sectors closely aligned with the city’s economic strengths, including manufacturing and processing industries, logistics and port services, energy, construction materials, and trade and services.

This is no coincidence. It reflects a long-term development strategy that has positioned Hai Phong as a major industrial and port-based hub. At the same time, it shows that local businesses have been able to identify and build on these advantages to expand their operations.

Amid global economic volatility, the 17 Hai Phong firms listed in the VNR500 have proven their resilience. They have not only withstood economic pressures but have also expanded production, diversified markets and gradually integrated more deeply into global value chains.

Hai Phong is now home to nearly 54,000 active enterprises. In 2025, the city recorded about 7,200 newly established businesses, up more than 33 percent year on year. However, most new firms remain small in scale, with limited resources and limited access to markets. The key challenge, therefore, is how to ensure that growth is not only about numbers, but also about quality and competitiveness.

In recent years, the city has poured investment into transport infrastructure, seaports, industrial zones and regional connectivity. To help more local enterprises grow to a scale comparable with those in the VNR500, Hai Phong needs to further strengthen its support mechanisms, accompanying businesses right from start-up to sustainable growth, while addressing concrete bottlenecks related to land access, tax policies, administrative procedures, etc.

Strengthening linkages among local enterprises is also a crucial factor, allowing businesses to share resources, integrate supply chains and improve their collective competitiveness.

With 17 companies already listed in the 2025 VNR500 and a rapidly expanding business base, Hai Phong has solid potential to raise this number in the years ahead. The key lies in sustained coordination between the city and the business community.
