Multiple targets overfulfiled
Director of the Hai Phong Maritime Administration Bui Nguyen Khoi said that amid widespread restructuring in the maritime transport market, volatile tariff policies and increasingly fierce competition among seaports in 2025, cargo throughput via Hai Phong seaports still reached 114.5 million tons.
This figure rose by nearly 10 million tons compared with 2024 and exceeded the 2025 plan. Container cargo alone surpassed 8.2 million TEU, up more than 10% year on year.
Hai Phong seaports were assessed as having the busiest vessel traffic nationwide in 2025, with more than 40,000 vessel calls in and out of ports. Of these, seagoing vessels accounted for around 19,000 calls, an increase of 2,000 calls compared with 2024.
A major milestone in Hai Phong seaports’ transformation in 2025 was the official commissioning of four additional berths in Lach Huyen, bringing the total number of operational berths there to six. All of these berths are equipped with advanced, state-of-the-art cargo handling technologies and equipment among the most modern in the world.

“Hai Phong seaports continuously set records in 2025, including receiving the largest vessel, achieving the fastest loading and unloading times, launching the highest number of maritime service routes, and ranking among the world’s top 30 busiest seaports. Notably, there were no maritime traffic accidents on the Hai Phong shipping channel,” Bui Nguyen Khoi added.
Continued strong expansion
According to Nguyen Van Tien, General Director of Hateco Haiphong International Container Terminal (HHIT) Company, although operations only began in April 2025, cargo throughput by the end of the year reached approximately 800,000 TEU. The port is currently operating eight maritime service routes to Europe and the US, with additional routes planned for 2026.
To enhance operational capacity, in early December, HHIT added two ship-to-shore (STS) cranes with an outreach of up to 24 container rows and six e-RTG yard cranes. By the fourth quarter of 2026, the port is expected to receive two more STS cranes and 12 additional e-RTG yard ones. Once investment is fully completed, the port will operate a total of nine STS and 32 e-RTG yard cranes. With this modern equipment system, HHIT aims to achieve its designed capacity of 2.2 million TEU per year.

Entering 2026, Hai Phong seaports will continue their strong expansion toward the sea, with construction set to begin on six additional berths in Lach Huyen.
Notably, Vingroup plans to invest in a port and logistics center project, covering more than 4,300 ha and worth nearly 14.2 billion USD, at Nam Do Son port. The port area will span 1,134 ha, featuring 21 berths and 42 wharves capable of accommodating vessels of up to 200,000 tons. The hinterland logistics zone will cover nearly 2,880 ha, hosting industrial facilities, warehouses and logistics services.
Under the plan, Vingroup’s port is expected to handle 2 million TEU by 2030. Capacity is projected to rise to 24 million TEU per year by 2035 and 42 million TEU per year by 2040.
The Hai Phong Maritime Administration, together with the city People’s Committee, will continue to propose that the Government and the Ministry of Construction soon invest in expanding turning basins and organizing two-way traffic along the Lach Huyen channel. This will help reduce waiting times and channel occupancy by large vessels, without affecting operations at downstream ports in Lach Huyen such as Dinh Vu, Nam Dinh Vu, Bach Dang and the Cam river.
