According to coach Nguyen Xuan Thao, Deputy Director of the Hai Phong Center for Sports Training and Competition, the city has 31 athletes and eight coaches in shooting, archery, table tennis, canoeing, chess, weightlifting, fencing, athletics, traditional boat racing, diving, rowing, sailing, and gymnastics. These are Hai Phong’s top coaches and athletes competing for the national teams at the 33rd SEA Games. Hai Phong also has half-back Nguyen Nhat Minh playing for Vietnam’s U22 men’s football team.

This is the first time Hai Phong has had 40 athletes and coaches to compete in the SEA Games as members of the national teams. Outstanding athletes such as Pham Quang Huy (shooting), Nguyen Thi Huong, Do Thi Thanh Thao, Hoang Thi Huong (boat racing), Tran Doan Quynh Nam, Phan Thi Ha Thanh (gymnastics), Nguyen Tung Duong (diving), Tran Dinh Thang (weightlifting), Vu Duc Anh, Hoang Thanh Giang (athletics), and Doan Thi Hong Nhung are strong gold-medal prospects for Vietnamese sports in general and Hai Phong in particular.

Among the 32 athletes competing in 14 sports, many are expected to win gold medals at the 33rd SEA Games in shooting, boat racing, weightlifting, and athletics. Gold-medal hopes include Nguyen Thi Huong, Pham Quang Huy, Tran Dinh Thang, Hoang Thanh Giang, Doan Thi Hong Nhung, and footballer Nguyen Nhat Minh. Boat racing (canoeing, rowing, and traditional boat racing) has the largest squad with 19 members (four coaches and 15 athletes), aiming for three gold medals.

Hai Phong’s high-performance sports delegation competing at the 33rd SEA Games with its largest-ever national team presence is an opportunity for the athletes to assert their ability and value, while strengthening the city’s position on the international stage and shaping future development strategies to elevate Hai Phong’s high-performance sports.
