Joy from new homes

Veteran Tran Trong Khoan, born in 1956 and residing in An Hai ward, Hai Phong city, beamed with happiness in his newly built, tidy house. Khoan joined the army in March 1975 and was demobilized in 1990. His family was in difficult circumstances as his wife and one daughter had passed away, while his other daughter was married and living separately. He lived alone in a deteriorated house built in 1986. During the rainy season, water leaked through the roof, and in winter, cold winds pierced through the walls.

Understanding his situation, the city Veterans Association, the city Customs Department (now the Customs Sub-department of Region 3), and the former An Duong district, along with local Party committees, authorities and residents, joined hands to build him a new home. After more than two months of construction, the 40-m2 house worth nearly 300 million VND was completed. It was a gift that embodies comradeship and gave Khoan a comfortable and stable place to live.

Many veterans across the city were excited and touched as they moved into new homes built with the support of fellow comrades. Many elderly veterans, struggling with declining health and lingering war-related conditions, have long dreamed of repairing or rebuilding their homes. The understanding and support from comrades not only provide material assistance but also serve as valuable emotional encouragement, giving them strength and motivation in life.

Strengthening comradeship

Comradeship houses symbolize the enduring bond among Uncle Ho’s soldiers.

Behind each of these individual houses lies a large movement - a deeply humanistic effort that Veterans Associations at all levels in the city has cultivated over the years.

“Showing gratitude is not only a responsibility but also a command from the hearts of Uncle Ho’s soldiers.” With this belief, Veterans Associations at all levels work closely with the Vietnam Fatherland Front, social organizations, units, and businesses to implement numerous support programs.

Homebuilding for veterans is one of the most prioritized initiatives. From 2022 to June 2025, Veterans Associations helped build or repair 328 houses for members with housing difficulties, with total funding exceeding 13 billion VND.

According to Dinh Van Truy, Vice Chairman of the city Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee and Chairman of the city Veterans Association, it is encouraging that, in addition to funding from the associations, support also comes from sectors, organizations, local authorities, and families. Groundbreaking or handover ceremonies for these houses are attended by representatives of local Party committees, authorities and organizations, who also contribute funds and supplies to help veterans improve their living conditions.

These comradeship houses have helped many veterans stabilize their lives, positively contributing to new-style rural and civilized urban building, poverty reduction and socio-economic development in localities. Beyond their material value, each new or renovated home holds profound emotional significance, enriching the bonds of comradeship among Uncle Ho’s soldiers in peacetime.
