18-year-old Nguyen Si Hieu, a graduate of Tran Phu High School for the Gifted in Hai Phong city and now a student at Ha Noi Medical University, became one of Vietnam’s outstanding young people with a gold medal at the 2024 International Biology Olympiad (IBO) and a second-class Labor Medal. Behind those impressive achievements lies a long journey of perseverance and dedication to his love for biology.

Born to a family where his father is a doctor and his mother a teacher, Hieu was nurtured from an early age with a love for books and learning. At Tran Phu High School for the Gifted, his homeroom teacher inspired and ignited his passion for biology.

From a quiet student, Hieu became an outstanding member of the national biology team. In 11th grade, after winning a second prize at the national contest for excellent students, he once considered giving up, but his teacher’s advised: “Do your best so you won’t regret it,” which motivated him to keep going.

The following year, he won first prize at the national contest and the gold medal at the IBO, a well-deserved reward for his tireless effort.

Now at Ha Noi Medical University, Hieu maintains that same spirit. He said that studying medicine is a long and demanding process that requires constant effort, but he enjoys the feeling of discovering and learning new knowledge every day.

Besides his studies, Hieu actively participates in various clubs and scientific research. In his first year at university, he published a paper in the field of obstetrics on a prestigious international journal. He is also studying French, planning to pursue further education abroad after graduation.

“I want to become a good doctor so I can help more people,” said Hieu when asked about his dream.

For Nguyen Si Hieu, success is not only about medals and awards but also about spreading knowledge and inspiring Hai Phong’s younger generations to continue pursuing their passion for science, creativity, and a sense of responsibility toward the community.
