Typhoon Matmo weakens, Hai Phong braces for thundershowers

Typhoon Matmo weakened into a tropical depression this morning, after moving deep into Guangxi province of China.

At 7 am today (October 6), the center of the tropical depression weakening from Typhoon Matmo was located around 22.0°N latitude and 107.1°E longitude, over southern Guangxi province of China. The strongest winds near the center were at level 7 (50 – 61 km/h), gusting to level 9. The system was moving westward at a speed of 20 – 25 km/h.

It is forecast that by 7 pm on October 6, the tropical depression will weaken further into a low-pressure zone and continue moving west-northwest at 20 – 25 km/h.

This morning (October 6), in the northern part of the Gulf of Tonkin, including Bach Long Vi special zone of Hai Phong city, winds reached level 6, gusting to level 8, with waves 2–3 m high and rough seas, which were dangerous conditions for vessels.

From this morning through the night of October 7, Hai Phong is predicted to experience rain, moderate to heavy showers, and thunderstorms, with rainfall ranging from 30 – 80 mm, and locally exceeding 100 mm. Whirlwinds and strong gusts are possible during thunderstorms.

According to the city Hydro-Meteorological Station, radar images taken around 9 am today showed developing convective clouds over Bac Ninh province moving toward northern communes and wards of Hai Phong such as Hop Tien, Thai Tan, An Phu, Nam Sach, Tran Hung Dao, and Chu Van An. In addition, thunderstorm clouds are also forming over the Gulf of Tonkin, including the Bach Long Vi area.

In the coming hours, these convective clouds are likely to continue developing, bringing showers and thunderstorms to the above areas before spreading to other communes and wards, including An Bien, Hai An, Kien An, Phu Lien, Duong Kinh, An Hung, An Khanh, An Quang, An Truong, An Lao, Kien Thuy, Kien Minh, Kien Hai, Kien Hung, Nghi Duong, Quyet Thang, Tien Lang, Tan Minh, Tien Minh, Chan Hung, Hung Thang, Vinh Bao, Nguyen Binh Khiem, Vinh Am, Vinh Hai, Vinh Hoa, Vinh Thinh, Vinh Thuan, Hai Hung, Nguyen Luong Bang, Bac Thanh Mien, Gia Phuc, Truong Tan, Dai Son, Chi Minh, Tan Ky, Tu Ky, Thanh Mien, Tan An, Vinh Lai, Khuc Thua Du, Nam Thanh Mien, Hong Chau, Ninh Giang, Lac Phuong, Le Dai Hanh, Tran Phu, Thai Tan, An Phu, Nam An Phu, Nam Sach, Tue Tinh, Cam Giang, Cam Giang, Mao Dien, Ke Sat, Binh Giang, Duong An, Yet Kieu, Gia Loc, Dai Sen, Hai Tay, Thanh Ha, Ha Bac, Viet Ha, and Tu Minh.

During thunderstorms, residents are advised to watch out for whirlwinds, lightning, and strong gusts that may cause trees to fall, damage houses, transportation systems, and infrastructure, posing serious risks to human safety.
