Storm No. 5 heading toward North Central Vietnam, Hai Phong warns of heavy rain and strong winds

From this afternoon, the northern area of the Gulf of Tonkin (including Bach Long Vi special zone) will experience strong winds of level 8, gusting to level 10, waves 2 – 4 m high, and rough seas.

According to the Hai Phong Hydrometeorological Station, at 4 am on August 24, the center of Storm No. 5 was located at about 17.6 degrees north latitude and 111.7 degrees east longitude, in the northern waters of the Hoang Sa archipelago, about 660 km east-southeast of Nghe An and about 640 km east of Ha Tinh. The maximum sustained winds near the center were at level 12 (118 – 133 km/h), gusting to level 15. The storm was moving west at about 20 km/h.

It is forecast that from the afternoon of August 24, the northern Gulf of Tonkin (including Bach Long Vi special zone) will have strong winds at level 8, gusting to level 10, waves 2 – 4 m high, and rough seas.

From the night of August 24, Cat Hai special zone waters will see strong winds at levels 6 – 7, gusting to 8 – 9, with waves 1 – 2 m high and rough seas.

From the night of August 24, coastal waters of Hai An, Dong Hai, Nam Trieu, Do Son, Nam Do Son, Duong Kinh wards and Chan Hung, Hung Thang, Kien Hai communes will experience increasing winds of level 4 – 5, gusting to 6 – 7, with waves 0.5 – 1 m high.

From the morning of August 25, the wards and communes of Thuy Nguyen, Thien Huong, Hoa Binh, Bach Dang, Luu Kiem, Le Ich Moc, Viet Khe, Hong Bang, Hong An, Ngo Quyen, Gia Vien, Le Chan, An Bien, An Duong, An Hai, An Phong, An Truong, Kien An, Phu Lien, Hung Dao, An Hung, An Khanh, An Quang, An Lao, Kien Thuy, Kien Minh, Kien Hung, Nghi Duong, Quyet Thang, Tien Lang, Tan Minh, Tien Minh, Vinh Bao, Nguyen Binh Khiem, Vinh Am, Vinh Hai, Vinh Hoa, Vinh Thinh, and Vinh Thuan will experience winds at level 3 – 4, sometimes reaching level 5, gusting to level 6.

Authorities warn that coastal land areas during the storm will be extremely dangerous and unsafe for any vehicles or structures, including tourist boats, passenger ferries, cargo vessels, fish cages, aquaculture farms, dikes, embankments, and coastal roads.

There is a high risk of boat capsizing, destruction of facilities, and flooding due to strong winds, high waves, and storm surges.

All vessels, anchorage areas, aquaculture farms, coastal dikes, and other marine activities in these areas face very high risks from thunderstorms, whirlwinds, strong winds, and large waves. Strong winds and gusts may topple trees, damage houses, transportation infrastructure, and public facilities, posing danger to human life. The disaster risk level of this storm is 3.

From the night of August 24 to the end of August 26, Hai Phong will experience moderate to heavy rainfall, with some areas seeing very heavy rain and thunderstorms.

In the Gulf of Tonkin (including Bach Long Vi special zone), heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected, with total rainfall of 100 – 150 mm.

In Hai Phong waters (including Cat Hai island special zone and Do Son ward), moderate to heavy rainfall, with some very heavy rain, is forecast with total rainfall of 80 – 120 mm, and in some areas more than 120 mm.

Inland areas (including all other communes and wards) will experience moderate to heavy rainfall, with some very heavy rain, ranging from 50 – 100 mm, and in some places more than 100 mm. Thunderstorms may also bring whirlwinds, lightning, and strong gusts.
