Tropical depression over Quang Ninh - Hai Phong waters, wind gusts reaching level 8

The center of the tropical depression was located over the coastal waters of Quang Ninh province and Hai Phong city on the morning of August 19.

According to the early morning bulletin from the Hai Phong Hydro-Meteorological Station, at 4 am today, the center of the tropical depression was at about 21.1N and 107.3E, over the coastal area of Quang Ninh - Hai Phong. The strongest winds near the center reached level 6 (39 - 49 km/h), gusting to level 8, moving northwest at about 15 km/h.

Under the influence of the tropical depression, Bach Long Vi station recorded level 6 winds with gusts reaching level 7. Hai Phong experienced rain, with moderate to heavy showers in some areas.

The northern part of the Gulf of Tonkin, including Bach Long Vi, Cat Hai, Co To, and Van Don, will see thunderstorms, strong winds of level 6, gusting to level 8, waves of 2 - 3.5 m, and rough seas on August 19.

Fishing vessels operating in these hazardous areas may encounter thunderstorms, waterspouts, strong winds, and high waves.

On land, coastal areas of Hai Phong, including Cat Hai and Lan Ha Bay, will have strong winds of level 6, gusting to level 8. Inland communes and wards will see winds of level 3 - 4.

Forecasts for August 19 indicate rain, moderate rain, and thunderstorms across Hai Phong city.

Rainfall is predicted to range from 40 - 70 mm in the Gulf of Tonkin, including Bach Long Vi special zone, 20 - 40 mm in Hai Phong’s coastal and eastern areas, and 15 - 30 mm in the western part of the city.

Thunderstorms may reduce visibility of drivers, cause slippery roads, and increase the risk of traffic accidents. Thunderstorms may also bring whirlwinds, lightning, and strong gusts capable of toppling trees and damaging houses, transport infrastructure, and other facilities.

Disaster risk warning due to whirlwinds and lightning is at level 1.
