Hai Phong enhances intellectual property rights for exports

The Hai Phong Department of Science and Technology, in coordination with the Intellectual Property Office under the Ministry of Science and Technology, held a seminar titled “Protection of intellectual property rights abroad for exports” on August 15.
According to data from the General Statistics Office, in the first six months of 2025, Vietnam’s total import-export turnover reached 432.03 billion USD, up 16.1% year-on-year, with a trade surplus of 7.63 billion USD.

In this context, intellectual property plays an important role in supporting enterprises to engage in trade and international investment.
The seminar focused on analyzing difficulties and obstacles in registering, managing, and developing intellectual property rights for key products; and providing guidance on procedures and processes for trademark and geographical indication registration in key markets such as China, the US, Japan, and Europe.

It also introduced and guided the use of the Madrid international trademark registration system, and presented support programs to improve the efficiency of intellectual property rights management and development in connection with trade promotion.
Participants also shared practical experiences in developing intellectual assets and promoting the role of farmers in protecting the brands of Vietnamese agricultural products in international markets; the role of customs authorities in monitoring, detecting, and handling imported and exported goods infringing intellectual property rights at border gates; practical experiences and recommendations to improve the effectiveness of trademark and geographical indication registration in key foreign markets, along with points to note for holders of intellectual property rights.

The seminar served as an opportunity for businesses, cooperatives, and production facilities to better understand the legal framework, grasp the registration process, take advantage of support programs, and proactively protect brands and product value in the global market.
Hai Phong has 124 agricultural products granted protection certificates by the Intellectual Property Office, including 2 geographical indications, 3 certification trademarks, and 119 collective trademarks. Some well-known products, such as Hoang Giang mung bean cakes, Thanh Ha lychees, Chu Dau ceramics, and My Dong mechanical casting, have been granted protection abroad.
